Generally classified as short oil, medium oil, and long oil-based, alkyd resins have achieved a reputation for being efficient, low-cost, yet delivering good performance. The resin is a reaction product of organic acids and polyols, and rheology manipulation is achieved by controlling the molecular weight. A very versatile resin, alkyd can be engineered to dry by itself at ambient temperature, by crosslinking with a secondary resin, or by temperature treatment with an amino resin. Characteristics:
Good gloss and color retention, although susceptible to weather effects
Excellent hardness and abrasion resistance
Fast drying for certain products
Excellent flexibility for certain products
Great versatility, can be used in almost any coating systems
